Announcing: Our Book Cover and Title!
"Fifteen Cents on the Dollar: How Americans Made the Black-White Wealth Gap" is now available to purchase
Dear Readers and Friends,
So many of you have been following our journey for nearly three years as we researched the Black-white wealth gap.
We have sat in property records rooms furrowing through deed book after deed book; we have done about 400 in-depth interviews, many for multiple hours and with more than a few tears shed; we have compared scores of old Census records, wills, justice records and federal filings; we have analyzed data set after data set; we have participated in a 63 mile justice walk, only sitting on the bus for part of it; we have found bullet holes on doors and gunfire remnants around homes of people we have come to know.
We have listened, we have learned and now we are ready to share.
Our book cover has recently posted, and we are delighted to post it here. We hope you will share your thoughts on it with us (please reply to this e-mail.)
What is 15 Cents on the Dollar? It is the Black-white wealth gap. Typical Black families have 15 cents on the dollar compared to typical white families. Our book brings this figure to life through narrative stories that span 200 years of history and are rooted in present day America.
We would be honored if you would purchase our book and help us spread the word:
www.15cents.info is the best site place to link to on social media.
If you post on social media that you have ordered our book, please tag us so that we can re-share your post.
With the book moved off of our computers, we will be more regularly writing you here over the next few months. If you don’t want to receive our updates, there is an unsubscribe button at the bottom of this email.
Today, we bring you three things:
First, for some weekend listening, check out our visit with podcast host Joel Goldberg on his “Rounding the Bases” program. This interview focuses on our partnership in teaching about racial wealth gaps at Yale and in writing our book. We hope you enjoy it. Click on episode 915 here.
A couple quotes from the podcast:
Second, we invite you to watch our appearance this Monday night, February 26, on the “Market Mondays” show produced by Earn Your Leisure. Many of you likely know Earn Your Leisure, but if you don’t know them, you should. Though they are only a few years old, they are among the top financial news outlets that the young Black Americans we interviewed for our book told us they rely on. Here is where you can watch our appearance at 8 p.m. on Monday.
Third, we bring you a private invitation: We will be holding a few virtual sessions over the next few months to share in-depth data that ties to race and money. It will be an opportunity for you to ask us questions about trends in wealth gaps, and it will also be an opportunity for readers of our book to learn more on wealth gap data that will complement your reading of the book.
Please sign-up here if you would like to attend our virtual sessions, and we will be sure you are invited.
Thank you for our interest in our work. At any time, we welcome your thoughts, and the best way for you to reach us is to reply to this email.
