Previously, on Feb. 26, Ebony and co-author Louise Story held a Racial Wealth Gap Symposium in Kansas City. The event was very impactful and was the first public racial wealth gap symposiums the authors held. With more than 200 people in attendance at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the event was at full capacity and filled up within 36 hours of the registration opening.
HERE IS THE ORIGINAL POST ABOUT THIS FIRST RACIAL WEALTH GAP SYMPOSIUM:
To share our knowledge of racial wealth gaps and to shine a light on other people working in this space, we will host a Racial Wealth Gap Symposium in Kansas City, Mo. It will be held on Feb. 26 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum’s Buck O’Neil Education & Research Center. The sign-up is here.
The free public event is for Greater Kansas City residents interested in growing their knowledge about wealth gaps with a lens on Black Americans. Those interested may be business and civic leaders or concerned citizens and family leaders who want information and data to enrich their conversations and practices.
First, we’ll provide a public preview to some of the original data we’ve curated in our forthcoming book, Fifteen Cents on the Dollar: How Americans Made the Black-White Wealth Gap (HarperCollins). The data gives insight into how different demographic groups have recovered or not recovered since the 2008 Great Recession. It includes a Harris Poll we commissioned to examine economic situations of different demographic groups, following the 2008 crisis. We will also highlight historical data on the Black-white wealth gap in our presentation and some policy programs that communities have experimented with, such as a minimum living wage.
KCUR 89.3, the symposium’s media partner, will make an edited version of the program available for its listeners, and we will post that on this page after the event.
Bob Kendrick, President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, will provide the welcome. The event will be rooted in Kansas City’s opportunities for racial progress. Two panels at the event will feature numerous community leaders, and there will be audience question and answer sessions.
These community leaders include:
Brandon Calloway, Founder and Executive Director of Kansas City G.I.F.T
Emmet Pierson Jr., President & CEO, Community Builders of Kansas City
Ryan Sorrell, Founder and Publisher of news outlet “KC Defender”
Wendy Doyle, President & CEO, United WE
Adam Hawley, Partner at BMG Advisors and co-founder of LIFT KC
Theodis Watson, Director of Community Development, CrossFirst Bank

Lisa R. Brooks, J.D., Special Projects Manager, Women’s Business Center
Carlos Gomez, President/CEO, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City
Christine Kemper, Founder and Board chair for Kansas City Girls Preparatory Academy
Two sponsors of this event are providing copies of Fifteen Cents on the Dollar to attendees and to some students in Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Kansas City. They are: The Players Coalition, a non-profit organization that works with professional athletes, coaches and owners across leagues to improve social justice and racial equality in our country. And The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, a Kansas City foundation focused on helping people with financial stability, upward mobility, and economic prosperity.
