Upcoming Racial Wealth Gap Symposium
To be held April 26-27 in Montgomery, Ala. Join us for the "Capital Matters Symposium"
Hope to see you in Montgomery, Ala. this April. We will be featured in the “Capital Matters Symposium” and will share data, history, insights and forward-looking analysis around the Black-white wealth gap.
Why is Montgomery one of our first stops? We see in Montgomery a past and future that should be appreciated. The city has its first Black mayor in the city's history, there is ongoing redevelopment of so many buildings, and a thriving art community and art projects like the mural by JohnOne.
The heritage and past of Montgomery is highly relevant to our work on the Black-white wealth gap. It was there on Coosa Street that so many Black individuals were enslaved, and just shy of 100 years after the Civil War, the city was the site of Rosa Parks's work, the bus boycott and the introduction to the world of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while he was working at the Dexter Baptist Church. Montgomery, in its role as the capitol, is an important connector to all of Alabama history --- we cover the Selma to Montgomery march in our book , and we write about the business boycotts in Birmingham (boycotts that have historical roots in the Montgomery bus boycotts). We also have a family in our book that was affected by the Tuskegee trials in Alabama, and there.
We are enthused to convene in Montgomery with people from all corners -- from local students at Chisholm High School to university academics to business people, artists, community leaders and more.
